Outdoor
Education
Trail Mix’s Education Committee undertakes many
projects to inform the public about:
-
current and planned Trail Mix projects
- trails that
make up the Juneau trail system
- hiking safety and etiquette
Board members and volunteers carry out educational projects,
as the paid staff have other responsibilities. We invite
volunteers to offer their skills, time, and energy to educational
projects – help us get the word out about trails
and hiking in Southeast Alaska!
Educational displays
There are many events (e.g. National Trails Day, Safety
Fair, Earth Day, Annual Meeting ) and trailhead bulletin
boards where Trail Mix can display brochures, photos,
safety gear, videos, posters, etc. We need people with
skills - graphic, computer, artistic, mapping, photographic – to
prepare brochures and displays. Call Trail Mix (790-6406)
or e-mail trailmix@alaska.com to volunteer.
Writing
The local newspapers welcome articles about Juneau trails – hiking,
cultural history, natural history, stewardship. If you
like writing and want to get published, please consider
writing an article that Trail Mix can submit to one of
the local papers for publication or distribute to our membership
in the bi-annual newsletter.
In the past, volunteers have contributed a number of articles for publication in the Juneau Empire.
Articles need not be lengthy, although the editor is generous
with space for text and photos. Call Trail Mix (790-6406)
or e-mail trailmix@alaska.com for details about submitting
articles for publication.
Schools
The Education Committee seeks volunteers who would like
work with teachers who are taking their classes out on
trails. Teachers have approached Trail Mix about training
and educational materials on hiking preparedness and
etiquette. Middle schools and some elementary schools
have trails adjacent to school property, so there are
many opportunities to get classes outside for nature
study and environmental education. Call Trail Mix (790-6406)
or e-mail trailmix@alaska.com to indicate an interest
in volunteering with classes.
Trail guides
Visitors to Juneau frequently have only a few hours to
hike local trails. They often ask for a trail guide with
a map and explanation of the natural and cultural history
of a particular trail. At the moment, they would need
to purchase a guidebook to all trails in the Juneau area
(e.g. 90 Short Walks Around Juneau) or download some
trail guide information from this
website prior to their arrival.
Trail Mix is seeking grant funding to develop and publish
the first in a series of full-color illustrated trail guides.
We seek volunteers who can contribute time and energy to
developing content and graphics for inclusion in such a
trail guide or to coordinate their publication. Eventually,
we envision a whole set of trail guides for sale at strategic
locations in Juneau, on a cost-recovery basis. Please let
Trail Mix know (790-6406 or trailmix@alaska.com) if you
are interested in any aspect of this project.
