Commercial Use of Trails
A Trails Working Group (TWG) was created in 2000 to facilitate
a process that would evaluate commercial activity on
the Juneau Trail System and make recommendations for
commercial and non-commercial trail designations.
To guide this process, Trail Mix’s Board of Directors
invites representatives of land management agencies, the
public, and the commercial guiding industry to be part
of the TWG. This is done in response to a request by the
City & Borough of Juneau Assembly, which perceived
problems with the lack of area-wide guidance for commercial
activities on trails and increasing commercial use on trails
diminishing the experiences of non-commercial users.
In 2004, members of the TWG represented the Assembly (1),
Trail Mix (2), the public (3), AK Department of Natural
Resources (1), US Forest Service (1), Eaglecrest (1), CBJ
Parks & Recreation (2), Commercial guiding businesses
(2).
Each year, the TWG meets several times during the Winter-early
Spring to:
identify all trails in the Juneau trail system
- eliminate
trails from the list that do not appear likely to attract
commercial use
- evaluate the effects of commercial
use on each trail from a variety of perspectives
- make
recommendations and present them to the public at a
forum where comments are invited
The recommendations and public comments are compiled into
a report that is presented to the Assembly for adoption
and given to the land-use agencies as guidelines for issuing
permits for commercial use. These recommendations will
also become a chapter in the Juneau Trails Plan, when it
is updated.
